"Hometown"
This particular selection is a poem I wrote for my freshman year Introduction to Creative Writing course. This piece showcases the beginning of myself as a writer in a college setting and also a time in my life where I didn't know much about where I wanted to go in life. I was a Creative Writing major simply because I had a creative writing course in high school which I enjoyed. Since I excelled in the high school level creative writing class, did not have any other interests that I could see myself obtaining a degree in, and did not want to enter college undeclared, I thought I would give creative writing a try in the college setting.
This was one of the first poems I wrote for my first college writing course, and it is obvious that my fear of being in a strange new place, surrounded by all new people I did not know, is a state of mind that found it's way into my writing and is accurately reflected in this poem. It captures the way I was feeling and the way I expect most of my fellow freshman were feeling at the time; homesick. This poem expresses those feelings and how trying to adapt in a new environment, will make you miss home more often than not.
The assignment for which I wrote this poem was very open-ended. I was told to write a poem; simple as that. This assignment represents an expressivist pedagogy. I think that this poem is an accurate representation of me writing from what I know. I feel that Peter Elbow would be in support of a project like this because while writing, I was not held down by any overarching rules or requirements.
